How to Pick the Right IEP Goals

Any google search about IEP goals will tell you that you must write SMART goals. That's very true, but... goals that only check the S.M.A.R.T. boxes can still miss the mark for many kids.

In a recent episode of the Special Education Inner Circle podcast, I shared my proven framework for writing IEP goals that are not just S.M.A.R.T. but are also R.I.G.H.T for each individual child.

S.M.A.R.T. goals developed in a vacuum often fail because they come from curriculum, standards, or district policies versus starting with the individual child. An overemphasis on S.M.A.R.T. goals can limit teaching moments or use a one-size-fits-all approach.

Effective IEP goals are more than compliant. They are “real world” and forward-thinking, with realistic expectations tailored to the individual child
